Keraamisen pinnoitetun pannun plussat ja miinukset

The pros and cons of ceramic coated pans

What does it mean if a pan has a ceramic coating?

Although ceramic coating sounds like it refers to a ceramic dish, this is not the case. The name comes from its enamel-like appearance. The interior surface of a ceramic pot or pan is coated with a natural, water- and oil-repellent layer that is applied over a metal or aluminium base.

This coating is made without PFAS compounds or heavy metals like lead and cadmium, making ceramic cookware a popular and more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional non-stick coatings.

99% of HEIROL's products are free from PFAS and plastics. In these products, we prefer ceramic coatings instead of using toxic and harmful chemicals that could enter our bodies through the food we cook.

The pros of a ceramic coating

1. Non-stick coating

A ceramic-coated pan is as easy to use as a Teflon pan and provides a non-stick surface without harmful chemicals. The ceramic coating reduces the need for grease and oil in cooking, as food does not stick to the pan as easily.

2. It's easy to clean

The ceramic coating is excellent at preventing food from sticking to the pan. For this reason, cleaning the pan is effortless. However, it is important to remember not to scrub the pan with a hard metal scrubber, as the coating can become scratched.

3. It's non-toxic

There are no PFAS chemicals in the ceramic coating, which means it is completely non-toxic. PFAS chemicals are known as dangerous "forever chemicals" that can cause various health issues. As the name suggests, these chemicals can never be removed from the Earth.

The cons of a ceramic coating

1. A ceramic coating is a bit more fragile than a Teflon one

Since this coating contains no heavy metals or toxic chemicals, it is more sensitive to temperature fluctuations. However, this does not mean that the pan cannot be used for as long as a Teflon pan. If you take care of the pan as you should and avoid overheating it, it may last up to five years!

2. A coated pan is not made for hard frying

If you are looking for a pan that you can use for frying a steak or cooking at high temperatures, a coated pan is not the best option. A coated pan performs best when heated at max medium heat (especially on an induction stove, which heats up much faster and more intensely) and only when using wooden, plastic, or silicone utensils. This applies to both ceramic-coated pans and Teflon pans.
