International Coffee Day 1.10.

Many of us, myself included, need that large cup of coffee to get the day going. I learned to drink coffee during my year abroad in Italy, so you might say, that I’m a bit of a late adopter when it comes to coffee. The ideal moments for coffee are those slow weekend mornings when you can lay underneath the covers and wait for that freshly brewed coffee aroma to fill the house.

At our office, we have our regular coffee breaks at 10 and 2 o’clock. Our coffee machine grinds up fresh beans each time and about 5 minutes before our coffee break, you can smell that wonderful cup of Joe waiting for ya. For the past few days, we have taken our cups of coffee and gone outside for our 2 o’clock coffee break. We strut around the nearby park and I might just have to say, the coffee tastes even better in the fresh fall weather!

 

Drinking coffee is one of the most well-known joys in the world. Especially, when it is prepared the right way and with high-quality ingredients. Just as everything else you do in the kitchen.

When you talk about different kinds of coffee cultures, Italy is sure to be mentioned. Like Italian food, when it comes to coffee, there are plenty of unwritten rules about it. For example, in Italy, you only drink your coffee with milk in the mornings. However, as a lover of cappuccino, I have to say that I have broken this ‘rule’ once or twice. 😉 In Italy, you don’t really sit down at a coffee shop to drink your cup of coffee – you order and enjoy your drink at the counter. It’s a quick routine-like procedure to get your caffeine intake. It’s very different from the Finnish way, but the Italians know what they are doing!

Coffee has been found to have plenty of health benefits. According to research, drinking a moderate amount of coffee doesn’t have any real negative side effects, but quite the opposite. Coffee has some beneficial minerals, such as magnesium and potassium, but very little energy. Coffee is believed to improve your short-term memory as well. My absolute favorite is an espresso-based coffee. These coffees are much more stomach-friendly and have a richer aroma and flavor than regular filtered coffee.

The Moka Pot

In Italy, coffee is almost always prepared with a Moka pot. It is very rare to find a regular coffee machine in an Italian home. As I was preparing my first meal for over 20 people in a rental villa in Italy, I asked the host for a larger coffee maker, than the 4 cup Moka pot I had, for breakfast. I got one the next morning – an 18 cup Moka pot… 🙂
